(Circa 1990)<\/h5>\n<p>Children, dogs and seagulls!<br \/>\nWho could be more up<br \/>\non the yuppie cruise to the Vineyard,<br \/>\nour first Friday bound for Oak Bluff?<\/p>\n<p>Babies bounce in dad-packs.<br \/>\nInfants set to breast.<br \/>\nToddlers ready for \"All fall down\u201d<br \/>\nas hounds cross paws for a rest.<\/p>\n<p>Ferry slip to creaky dock\u00ad<br \/>\nunder Cotton Candy clouds,<br \/>\nover white caps tipped for jaunty sails and<br \/>\nthe straw hat, flower-brimmed crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Off island rules surrendered.<br \/>\nIsland rites abide.<br \/>\nPast Vineyard Haven's Five Corners.<br \/>\nDone best if one does not drive.<\/p>\n<p>For a glimpse of Gayhead splendor,<br \/>\nof Edgartown's prim grandeur,<br \/>\nof West Tisbury Granary hopping,<br \/>\nor Oak Bluff's gingerbread tour.<\/p>\n<p>Weekends slide toward dock lines,<br \/>\npacking a ferry or barge<br \/>\nas a sobering crowd on the mainland run<br \/>\nstands consoled under seafaring \/>\nthe wetland\u2019s chatty critters.<\/p>\n<p>Jenny takes her first loop<br \/>\non the sitting mower.<br \/>\nLike her first ride on a bike<br \/>\nat five, near six.<\/p>\n<p>Jenny dares.<br \/>\nJenny braves.<br \/>\nShe takes her licks.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m under a golden yellow<br \/>\nPier 1 umbrella<br \/>\nwith a cut glass vase of<br \/>\nQueen Anne\u2019s Lace.<\/p>\n<p>We all share<br \/>\nthe sweet smell of<br \/>\nfresh cut grass,<br \/>\nblue sky and<br \/>\nskirt of draping<br \/>\nAugust limbs.<br \/>\nThe triumphant<br \/>\nlawn bride rides.<br \/>\nThe beaming groom grins.<\/p>\n<p>I heard<br \/>\nnothing really matters.<br \/>\nNothing lasts.<br \/>\nStill, all of nature chatters<br \/>\nas our Jenny cuts the grass.<\/p>\n<h5>Candlewood North<br \/>\nConnecticut (Circa &nbsp;2015)<\/h5>\n<p>A little life.<br \/>\nA big splash.<br \/>\nRace to the float,<br \/>\nbut, first, better ask.<\/p>\n<p>Watch a medic on Survivor's dock.<br \/>\nWipe extra photos from the<br \/>\nSolstice fire.<br \/>\nClick, click, tock, tock.<\/p>\n<p>The buzz of voices<br \/>\nturn a row of<br \/>\ntanned young moms.<br \/>\nThe line of Adirondack chairs<br \/>\ngleam - as seen from the seaplane.<\/p>\n<p>Trees cast shadows<br \/>\nas night gently falls.<br \/>\nAs one by one,<br \/>\nthe children call.<\/p>\n<p>\"Mommy, watch me!'<br \/>\nechoes across the Out: A Dream Excursion&nbsp;<br \/>\nFrance (Circa 1995)<\/h5>\n<p>Crossing shadows and cobble as<br \/>\ncenturies of former lovers,<br \/>\nto the ramparts of Montelimar,<br \/>\nwe hug vin, pain and fromage<br \/>\npast Inspector Concierge.<\/p>\n<p>On a terrace in the twilight,<br \/>\nwe breathe in the nectar of summer,<br \/>\nhear mothers calling children,<br \/>\ntoasted children straggling home.<\/p>\n<p>Miles to go before Paris,<br \/>\nflamb\u00e9 in our feast of France.<br \/>\nWe blow kisses to beckon nightfall,<br \/>\nto bed in a moonlit trance.<\/p>\n<p>Crossing fields of lavender and sunflowers,<br \/>\nwe shrug off thunder showers.<\/p>\n<p>We yield a tour day to a sidewalk caf\u00e9.<br \/>\nMemory preserves a flutter of lace.<\/p>\n<p>Farmer aristocrats, vineyard bronzed,<br \/>\npocket our francs in a marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>Arm-in-arm to Paris,<br \/>\nshedding all such country quiet.<br \/>\nBeguiled by a city where bistros await,<br \/>\nwe twirl up the tower,<br \/>\nscanning lights upon lights.<br \/>\nAnchored at heart,<br \/>\nas the Seine River flows,<br \/>\nto revel in love's awesome depths,<br \/>\nfearless 1980)<\/h5>\n<p>What is wrong with this picture?<br \/>\nIncongruous lawn table and flower vase<br \/>\ncompeting with fronds in giant cups?<br \/>\nOn the top of a triple-decker boat?<\/p>\n<p>Such conspicuous consumption<br \/>\nhas no right to float<br \/>\nin a tropical heat wave<br \/>\nabove Lake George.<\/p>\n<p>On a night like this,<br \/>\nall is cinema:<br \/>\nflowers, water, chairs flecked<br \/>\nwith lights, cameras, action.<\/p>\n<p>Laughing women and cursing gents<br \/>\ncommence their show of fun<br \/>\nwhile boardwalk spectators eye<br \/>\na needle fit for no camel and<br \/>\na townie waitress shrugs off her despair.<\/p>\n<p>Like a child shaking chills<br \/>\non a winter's night, skating,<br \/>\nthe only one there<br \/>\nwhen thirty miles of ripples freeze.<br \/>\nStill as the cash register.<br \/>\nLong as the line at welfare.<\/p>\n<p>Like an idle cook stewing in his juice,<br \/>\na new boy over his first fist fight.<br \/>\nSeems nowhere to go but up.<br \/>\nIn such a \"have and have not\" world,<br \/>\ncouldn't one deck be enough?<\/p>\n<h5>Free Fall at Sherwood Island<br \/>\nConnecticut (Circa 1985)<\/h5>\n<p>The kites are moored above the beach.<br \/>\nAll is quiet by the Sound.<br \/>\nBut there is a buzz of fighter planes<br \/>\ncareening toward the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The boys thrive at the landing strip<br \/>\nbeyond the tall marsh grass.<br \/>\nWhite haired, gray haired, balding boys.<br \/>\nVictorious at last.<\/p>\n<p>The beach head\u2019s theirs<br \/>\nand all the clouds.<br \/>\nThe parking lot<br \/>\nwithout the crowds<br \/>\nas yonder in their wildest blue,<br \/>\na dog fight howls<br \/>\nand nose to tail,<br \/>\nthe toy planes spin.<br \/>\nDiving, rising, diving again<br \/>\nto end in split-second saves.<\/p>\n<p>What brushes with destruction<br \/>\nfor the tiny motor blades.<br \/>\nWhat close calls for the fine wood wings.<br \/>\nWhat glory for each flag decal.&nbsp;<br \/>\nFew could resist the spoils of a war<br \/>\nthis autumn among ace flying pals.<\/p>\n<h5>Remington, The Raptor<br \/>\nNew York (Circa 1990)<\/h5>\n<p>I have but one bare mews, and<br \/>\nI am not fooled by<br \/>\nthe shadow of window bars<br \/>\nthat creep across its walls.<\/p>\n<p>I keep my own counsel,<br \/>\nwaiting for a wing or<br \/>\nwhisker to fall.<\/p>\n<p>I awake for the hood<br \/>\nto cover my eyes,<br \/>\nfor the glove and<br \/>\nthen the leash.<br \/>\nFor the human voice<br \/>\ncaressing me<br \/>\nin its whispered,<br \/>\nsoothing speech.<\/p>\n<p>I wait for<br \/>\nthe humming engine,<br \/>\nthe whinnying horse,<br \/>\nthe panting hounds,<br \/>\nthe pointer\u2019s yelping cry.<\/p>\n<p>I wait for the jingle of<br \/>\n<i>my <\/i>bells to shake the \/>\nNew York (Circa 1985)<\/h5>\n<p>Their rowboat bounds<br \/>\nfor\u00ad blindly glistening waves.<br \/>\nLurching from the shore,<br \/>\nthey bicker and spin<br \/>\ninto the sun's path<br \/>\ntill at last\u00ad<br \/>\nthey are lost to my sight<br \/>\nlike the first astronauts<br \/>\ngone behind the moon.<\/p>\n<p>Speed boats,<br \/>\nbellowing motors and dudes,<br \/>\nnow leeward, starboard<br \/>\nbow-to-stern loom.<br \/>\nHooting teen seamen<br \/>\nguzzle&nbsp;a six pack or two<br \/>\nHot dogging it for dockside pals.<\/p>\n<p>Like mindless comets<br \/>\nthey spear a wake.<br \/>\nAsteroids,<br \/>\nready to forsake the wheel.<br \/>\nAll I hear are engines<br \/>\nand squeals<br \/>\nas the mad dash into the sun.<\/p>\n<p>Given the turbulent liquid space,<br \/>\nthe day's end voyage<br \/>\nnow seems a mistake.<br \/>\nRe-entry cannot come too soon<br \/>\nfor my daring explorers,<br \/>\nmy two young daughters.<\/p>\n<p>\"This is mission control.<br \/>\nCome in, please.<br \/>\nTell me what you saw.<br \/>\nBring samples<br \/>\nfrom the far-off shore.<br \/>\nRow here victorious<br \/>\nand nonchalant...\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sun drops to silhouette<br \/>\ntheir boat into view.<br \/>\nAt peace in a cove<br \/>\nriotous with crickets.<\/p>\n<p>Bent over lilies\u00ad<br \/>\nbundled up for the night,<br \/>\nthe girls are all right.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes pull their oars hard,<br \/>\nwill them to this shore,<br \/>\npassed macho vessels,<br \/>\nintoxicated with power.<\/p>\n<p>As they dart across the lawn<br \/>\nand toss down 2014)<\/h5>\n<p>With a child-sized broom,<br \/>\nI stoop to sweep through rooms,<br \/>\npast our cozy, creaky bed,<br \/>\nfull, not queen.<\/p>\n<p>I cross the wooden planks,<br \/>\nboth dull and rich with age.<br \/>\nPeer at windows to my worlds,<br \/>\nto woods and an office screen.<\/p>\n<p>To where the cat scratches a post<br \/>\nand a sleeper couch plays host<br \/>\nto kids and grandkids<br \/>\nevery now and then \u2026<br \/>\nfor hugs and laughs<br \/>\nafter shivering swims.<\/p>\n<p>Past the glass-faced pantry,<br \/>\nso like the window sill,<br \/>\nonce filled with fruits of the season<br \/>\nand a smiling plaster chef,<br \/>\nsaintly patron of our bounty.<\/p>\n<p>To the side door,<br \/>\ndraped and sprayed<br \/>\nthick with Home Defense,<br \/>\nwhere I cupped all moths to exit<br \/>\nand coaxed their nightly flights.<\/p>\n<p>Onto the screened-in porch,<br \/>\nour paradise of sorts.<br \/>\nFor breakfast, rain or shine.<br \/>\nFor dining in candlelight.<br \/>\nHere, I sweep what's left of wasps<br \/>\ndowned in \"us\" or \"them\" fights.<\/p>\n<p>I will not sweep the Skytop view<br \/>\nof sloping lawn and towering trees.<br \/>\nThe path into the forest,<br \/>\nor hummingbirds on a breeze.<\/p>\n<p>I hold fast northern creature songs<br \/>\ntill once again we call this home<br \/>\nnext year.<\/p>\n<p><div
