style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">On Seeing My Brother, Ed, the Brave<br \/> by Reggie Morrisey, August 5, 2009<\/h5>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">The tribes will gather<br \/> at Sycamore Canyon.<br \/> Elders from the north and east,<br \/> braves from the south,<br \/> the councils from the valleys.<br \/> To set the tents<br \/> and sit by the fire,<br \/> To circle brave Ed,<br \/> to name his spirits,<br \/> the bobcat, owl and hawk.<br \/> To walk west<br \/> to the ocean\u2019s edge,<br \/> reflecting peace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">I, Dove,<br \/> speak of passage,<br \/> of life\u2019s ever flowing stream,<br \/> of the Brave<br \/> who breathes music,<br \/> whose hands<br \/> conceive of new things<br \/> under the sun.<br \/> Who casts light visions,<br \/> who crafts moccasins<br \/> for the tiniest feet of the tribe,<br \/> so they can walk with him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">I, Dove,<br \/> speak of my spirit brother, Ed,<br \/> who, like the bobcat, delves so deep,<br \/> some dare not follow.<br \/> Who, like the wise owl,<br \/> hoots to the dragonfly and the whale.<br \/> Who, like the hawk, trails the curve<br \/> of\u00a0the Earth and is not afraid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">A band of beads<br \/> circle his wide-brimmed hat.<br \/> All who meet him<br \/> grasp his panda bear kacinas,<br \/> native dolls of chenille stems,<br \/> his panda bear wayas for peace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">The stars will gather<br \/> over Sycamore Canyon<br \/> and south at Malibu.<br \/> The mist may 2009<\/h5>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Cedar Key is the coast of nature.<br \/>Yes, nature prevails.<br \/>The tide rolls out where mullets fly<br \/>and oysters rise in a<br \/>field of puffy bar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">A full-moon spring-tide takes <br \/>more than a foot of water down.<br \/>They say it takes an elephant gun<br \/>to down a braying air boat as it thunders by.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Even black mangroves spring up here.<br \/>Like olive trees with their green berets.<br \/>Like Rosewood blacks who fled<br \/>the redneck terror of the Roaring Twenties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Cedar Key plays home to migrant snowbirds.<br \/>Some in condos \u2013 with binoculars.<br \/>Some high stepping through stressed bars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">They dare not eat the oysters<br \/>for the poison rising up<br \/>inside the earthen shells.<br \/>To live and die by spring tides.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Slowly, the bar fades<br \/>and beds are made<br \/>as water rises.<br \/>Slowly, the church bell tolls,<br \/>warn as the creaky dock <br \/>where big boats wait their day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">As hogs rev their motors <br \/>outside Annie\u2019s Caf\u00e9, <br \/>soon to cruise,<br \/>we ready our canoes.<\/p>\n<p>Read a poem about dabbing lagoon perfume.<br \/> Venus descends to bask in her beauty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">The light above Venice is her crown.<br \/> As doves coo evensong and<br \/> swell in San Marco\u2019s square,<br \/> the sky in the cap of the cathedral<br \/> is a scroll of her golden hair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">We see the ghostly fleet of the Doge<br \/> returned with its spoils of war,<br \/> four Byzantine horses<br \/> pinned by this duomo\u2019s door.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">The music of Vivaldi<br \/> springs in her narrow streets.<br \/> Like his orchestra of orphan girls,<br \/> cloistered behind a screen,<br \/> Venice is mysterious,<br \/> more beautiful, sight unseen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">We approach the glass blower\u2019s gate<br \/> and hear her bridge of sighs<br \/> in the uproar of the furnace and<br \/> imagined, sad goodbyes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Gondola, accelerato and traghetto<br \/> vie for a place on her Grand Canal.<br \/> A female city cloaked in romance history,<br \/> swoons for the tenor\u2019s passionate woe.<br \/> Yet steps back from relentless waves<br \/> lapping at her toe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Piazza, arcade, fetching<br \/> human voices.<br \/> Nary a humming motorcar.<br \/> Frowning women fling open windows,<br \/> her silent police, her vigilant spies.<br \/> They could sound the alarm,<br \/> could bid us to hide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">From Attila the Hun to<br \/> the cannons of Napoleon.<br \/> The Lombard invasion,<br \/> the fall of Milan.<br \/> From the fourth Crusade<br \/> to Pope Hadrian,<br \/> Venice whirled back<br \/> from the battles of man.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Once abandoned the buoys.<br \/> Hid channel markers.<br \/> Her maze of shoals impassable.<br \/> Venice the obscure, impenetrable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">We sip espresso at a bustling caf\u00e9.<br \/> Taste a feast from the sea<br \/> when our night arrives.<br \/> Drift in sleep as church bells peal<br \/> and Casanovas lie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\">Dream of powdered wig, silk gown and veil.<br \/> Of a peacock mask for the Carnavale.<br \/> Of a woman who has survived.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:
