Life Challengers Approaching Dusk (1985)\u00a0<\/h4>\n

Their rowboat bounds for\u00ad blindly glistening waves.<\/p>\n

Lurching from the shore,<\/p>\n

they bicker and spin<\/p>\n

into the sun's path<\/p>\n

till at last\u00ad<\/p>\n

they are lost to my sight\u2011<\/p>\n

like the first astronauts<\/p>\n

gone behind the moon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speed boats,<\/p>\n

bellowing motors and dudes,<\/p>\n

now leeward, starboard<\/p>\n

bow-to-stern loom.\u00ad<\/p>\n

Hooting teen seamen guzzle<\/p>\n

a six pack or two,<\/p>\n

Hot doggin it for dockside pals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Like mindless comets,<\/p>\n

they spear a wake.<\/p>\n

Asteroids,<\/p>\n

ready to forsake the wheel.<\/p>\n

All I hear are engines<\/p>\n

and squeals<\/p>\n

as the mad dash into the sun.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Given the turbulent liquid space,<\/p>\n

the day's end voyage<\/p>\n

now seems a mistake.<\/p>\n

Re-entry cannot come too soon\u2011<\/p>\n

for my daring explorers,<\/p>\n

two young daughters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"This is mission control.<\/p>\n

Come in, please.<\/p>\n

Tell me what you saw.<\/p>\n

Bring samples<\/p>\n

from the far off shore.<\/p>\n

Row here victorious<\/p>\n

and nonchalant ...\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sun drops to silhouette<\/p>\n

their boat into view.<\/p>\n

At peace in a cove<\/p>\n

riotous with crickets.<\/p>\n

Bent over lilies\u00ad<\/p>\n

bundled up for the night,<\/p>\n

the girls are all right.\u00a0<\/p>\n

My eyes pull their oars hard,<\/p>\n

will them to this shore,<\/p>\n

passed macho vessels,<\/p>\n

intoxicated with power.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As they dart across the lawn<\/p>\n

and toss down the oars,<\/p>\n

I wonder<\/p>\n

who wills the wild boys home<\/p>\n

at this bewitching hour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
